One Life
Federico Veronesi
One Life is a large-format (30cm x 28cm) book, featuring over 90 images of African wildlife in black and white and color. A celebration of life as the strongest connection between us humans and our companions on this planet, the animals, is at the heart of this book. It’s a journey of life, from birth to adulthood, through deserts and rivers, rain and mist, to find one’s place in this world. The protagonist is one, though interpreted by different animals in every image. Each of them represents one part of our common story. Each one represents all of them. All of us, united in our universal spirit and the emotions we experience, desolation and fear, resilience and determination, failure and triumph, sadness and joy.
From the introduction: “It was on an afternoon in December 2017 that I first conceived the idea for this book. I was in one of my favourite places, the savannahs of the Southern Serengeti in Tanzania. I saw a lioness with her two young cubs standing on a kopje. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen lions on that particular rock – a few months before I had photographed a magnificent old male who had recently moved in to the territory from the north. After his siesta, he strolled along the edge of the rock and then descended onto the plains to join his brother. His black mane and the intensity of his eyes was unforgettable. One of the cubs climbed exactly to the same spot where he had posed and thus I had the idea of the rock as a stage, a setting for the tale of life from birth to adulthood – the cub and the old male. The image represented the essence of the circle of life, father and son on the same path. But I also saw it as though the cub and the adult were one, the same Lion. With life in between. I thought back to my own childhood and my first trip to Africa and how, forty years on, I was driving through the same landscape, with my life in between. I began to visualise a sequence of images that would portray this common story. The second event that contributed to the genesis of this book was the birth of my son Giulio, in June 2017. I wanted to make a photographic book that would reveal to him something of my life, and thus a little of his own life too, through the eyes of the magnificent animals I encountered on my way”.
Proceeds from the sale of this book from our website will be spilt 50/50 between Remembering Wildlife and the photographer.
